Why we recommend it

What it does

The 2 TB WD Purple is a hard drive built for surveillance recorders, which write video nonstop around the clock. A regular computer drive is meant to work in short bursts; this one handles a workload of up to 180 TB per year, up to three times that of a desktop drive. It installs inside your DVR or NVR and is where all your camera recordings are stored.

Its AllFrame technology helps reduce dropped frames and improves video playback. Western Digital rates it for up to 64 cameras and systems with up to 8 bays, with a 1 million hour MTBF and a 3-year limited warranty. It uses CMR recording, a 3.5-inch form factor and a SATA connection, the same as most recorders. How many days it holds depends on your cameras and how you set up recording.
